Reluctantly offering my 1984 280GE LWB for sale, as I\'ve picked up a Jaguar E-Type (yes, I know....I\'m a masochist) and would like to allocate funds from the G towards the restoration of the Jag. Anyhow, my G began life in Duisburg, Germany and was imported to The Colonies in the late \'80s. It is finished in DB-6009 Forest Green with the Plaid interior, which is in excellent condition. Mileage on the truck is recorded as 45,000 but could very well be 145,000. I can\'t confirm as the truck only has a five digit odometer, but given the amount of work I had to do to it, let\'s assume 145,000. I looked and looked until I found the exact G I was looking for (for a long time!) and set out on a motherload of mechanical \'freshening\' as follows:
- Oil and filter change (Castrol GTX 20W-50)
- Transmission fluid and filter change (Castrol Dex/Merc ATF)
- Brake fluid changed (Ate \'SL\' DOT 4 type)
- Coolant changed (Peak Global Lifetime Fill type)
- Front and rear diff oil changed (Agip 80W-90)
- Locker fluid changed (Ate \'SL\' DOT 4 type)
- Diff lock hose and \"F\" fitting replaced
- Transfer case completely rebuilt (bearings, seals, gears, speedo drive, etc...) and photo-documented
- Transfer case mounts replaced
- Fuel tank cap replaced with OE lockable type
- Front and rear wiper blades replaced
- MB \'Summer Fit\' added to windscreen washer reservoir
- All drive belts replaced with OE Continental items
- Distributor cap replaced
- Ignition rotor replaced
- Ignition wires replaced
- Spark plugs replaced
- Valves adjusted and cam cover/spark plug well gaskets replaced
- Throttle linkage disassembled, cleaned, lubricated, new shackle and clips installed
- Both rear spring perches, bump stops and cups replaced
- Rear springs replaced using OE Sachs \"yellow-orange\" units
- Front springs replaced using OE Sachs \"yellow-orange\" units
- Complete exhaust system (pipes, silencers, brackets, buffers) replaced with factory Mercedes-Benz components
- Front axle assembly replaced with factory rebuilt item from Mercedes-Benz
- Original European tow-ball cut off and replaced with standard US 2\" box-section receiver. Factory trailer wiring present and in good shape
- New Mercedes-Benz Absorbed Glass Mat battery
So needless to say, the truck is in pretty fine fettle. It does have the trademark G-Wagen rust, most notably the base of the front windscreen, tail lamp buckets, some in the sills and some surface spots here and there on the body. The frame and floors, however, are in excellent condition, so none of the corrosion affects the safety or driveability of the truck in any way, it\'s just cosmetic. I can obtain two new sills from a local MB shop for $120/each if the new owner would like to purchase them and the tail light buckets are not too expensive at around $159/each from Eurotruck. I didn\'t have an interest in doing the work on the body as it would be a winter vehicle for me so I\'d consider the money spent there to be a waste. I\'d rather have it as perfect mechanically as it can be rather than a Pebble Beach restoration if you know what I mean. The original alloy wheels and fender flares are present and in excellent condition.
The truck is equipped with power windows, A/C and the original Euro H4 headlamps with parking/city lights. The original radio is no longer present but a Blaupunkt in-dash CD deck is there however it is not hooked up. All of the electrical items work save for the instrument lights. The climate control works fine but the A/C condenser sprung a leak this spring. I\'ve not attended to it so that\'s something for the new owner to do. The brakes were redone by the previous owner and are still in good shape, the tires have barely any wear and the truck runs beautifully with no overheating or other issues, however at 30-50mph there is a slight harmonic vibration, and I think it\'s due to the short shaft needing to be balanced, but again I\'m going to let the new owner handle that, as the Jaguar has fully captivated my attention and the truck can be driven anywhere just fine as it is, as at typical freeway speeds it\'s fine.
I\'ve sunk a ton of money into this truck and I\'ve enjoyed every moment with it, however I\'m a sports car guy at the core, and when the XKE became available, I knew I had to have it no matter what the cost, so hopefully I can find another willing owner to continue to cherish and care for this one. I figured I\'d advertise it here before putting it on eBay, as I\'d really love for another enthusiast to have it. Please feel free to direct any questions to me as I\'ll be happy to articulate on any additional topics not covered here. I can be reached by phone at (513) 519-7302 or email at QV5000@gmail.com anytime. Price on the truck is $10,500.00. Aaron Greenberg; (513) 519-7302 Cincinnati, Ohio USA Posted: 2010-06-24 |
