Custom Springs
I needed more lift to clear the bigger tires, and wasn't wild about the factory options. (or prices) So I set about getting a set custom wound. Here is what it looked like with the stock springs. The back isn't too bad since it lifted about an inch after I removed the top. Plus I trimmed the rear fenders to keep things from rubbing under articulation.
The front springs were first, here is a new one with the stock spring.
Damn, new problem. With the extra lift and longer shocks the drive shaft hits the support for the transmission. It is also just a hair from touching one of the frame cross members. I'll be dealing with this soon.
Both the fronts are on, time to move to the rear.
New approach rocks!
Here's the rear spring comparison shot. The biggest difference is that the old springs were variable, the new ones are not. Notice the consistent spring thickness throughout.
Oh yeah, that's what I'm talking about.
ROUND 2
Well after the engine swap the truck listed a little to port. In other words, the drivers side sat low. I had another set of springs made that were longer on one side and had a stiffer spring rate giving it a bit more lift and carrying capacity. Another problem cropped up and I ended up swapping the axles out. This lifted the truck even more! I haven't made any careful measurements, but at this point I would guess the Gwagen to be at about 6" of lift. Looks like I need bigger tires...
