"mserpe"
Welcome!
My G-wagen experience began as a teen (yes I'm that young!). I was 14 and a neighbor had purchased overseas a wonderful little 280GE SWB and upon seeing what he could do with it I instantly fell in love. At this time, I was mostly into Moto-X and riding my ATC a great deal, but I knew a license was not far off.
Anyway, never did get that Gwagen until much later. A few years ago I had my first Gwagen experiences with another little Red SWB, but this was short lived as it had too many problems to keep.
Then my father purchased a 1984 LWB, which is pictured below. This truck travelled around quite a bit before landing in my hands in California with crapped out axles. Taking ages to rebuild with 6.17:1 gearing and all new bearings, it was just the start to a huge project that went nowhere. I say that because after months of rebuilding everything, lifting the rig, installing 35" tires, etc., my wife and I were slammed by a DUI in a fully laden pickup travelling dead on into us at over 70 mph.
One thing we are grateful for is the great safety of the Gwagen chassis and body, not to mention excellent Recaro seats and lots of weight! We travelled about 10 feet before coming to a stop, the other party went about 2 football fields off the road.
Now that Gwagen, after several auctions has landed at a new owner in South Carolina, and we hope to see it come back to life once again sometime.
Next, we recently acquired the G I always wanted, the SWB cabrio, CA legal, with a hardtop. This is just beginning to take shape as my next project. Having gained immense insight from my previous G experiences and those on the JTO web board, I think I am ready to do this one right!
