Jock Marlo visits G friends in Peru 2003:
I was able to deliver an EPC cd to Carlos, as well as a clubgwagen t shirt. It
sure is nice to go bearing gifts! The CD will surely come in handy in his ongoing restoration of his
Dad's 1981 230 GE.
His dad bought the G in 1982 during an international exhibitation held in
Lima. His dad owns a telecommunications company, and has used the G
extensively travelling the back Andes to small villages bringing the first
phones and tv connections. I know this sounds like something out of a G
wagen brochure, but this is real life!
The G has over 400,000 kilometers, and is still running pretty strong. It
had a recent paint job and looks great.
The stories Carlos told me about he and his dad travelling throughout Peru
in the G were great. One time his dad traversed the same river 13 times
coming home from a village. Most of the times the villages had no roads,
and many of the indians had never seen a car before. Another occasion,
during one of the several coup de etat (sic), he and his dad were driving to
a small village and came upon a roadblock staffed by military. Altough they
feared the worse, instead they received a full salute and were waived
through--it must have been the army green color of the G.
According to Carlos, four wheeling in Peru, as a hobby/activity is very
rare. Most 4wds are purely for work trucks. In 1982, when his dad bought
the G, people would refer to it as a "land rover" which was the colloquial
for "four wheel drive truck."
There are a total of about 20 Gs in Peru, and Carlos knows the tag numbers
of all of them. During my visit I saw a Puch G on the transamerican
highway, and sure enough it was a friend of Carlos. I included a couple
shots of that.
Carlos met me at my hotel and took me four wheeling Peruvian style. We
visited a very small village, then went hill climbing up to the top of some
great vistas. It was truly a great experience.
Carlos' plans are to rebuid the motor, or find a diesel. He's even thinking
of a propane conversion. At 4.00/gallon, I cant blame him.
Interestingly, in Peru you only pay to register a car for the first 2 years.
After that, there is no use fee (just high priced gas). Also, now I know
where all the "older" cars from Japan end up--in Peru.

yes, this trip really made me miss my G!
