Trail Reports : Fins-n-Things, Sept. 2001

We had four G-wagens show up for the first club outing. All were LWB
versions in essentially stock form. From Left to right, Jock Marlo's '84
280GE, My G320, John Demcos G500 and Erwin Hockins G500. Of course Erwin
tells us that his son is part owner in the silver G500, but since Erwin put
up most of the money he got to be official pilot this time. Then some faces
to go with the names. Left to right, Jock, Denis Glennon(owns a '90 300GE
LWB 5sp), Myself, John, his son Ranger, daughter Liz, and Erwin. The
Canyonlands Inn was the morning meeting place before hitting the trails.
Fins and things was the first trail we did. Erwin had been out on the trail
the day before and figured it was a good one to start with. We had to pay $5
per vehicle to get in. Once in we made our way to the trail head and let the
games begin. One of the first obstacles is a sand hill. Jock and I both took
runs at it and got stuck about half way up. We backed down and aired the
tires down. I took a pretty good run at it but with the lower tire pressure
it proved to be pretty darn easy to climb. I have to give Erwin the Rommel
award for the sand hill climb, his G500 came up the hill full bore, he even
had the front tires off the ground over one of the humps, his years of
driving in the sand in Texas made him king of the hill.
Once on the top of the hill the landscape turned to slickrock. We spent a
little time climbing up and down the steep little hills.......
Ocassionally using the open sunroofs for navigation!
We followed the trail over a few other
pretty good climbs, I know I used my rear locker in several places. This is
a fun little trail, we spent about three hours playing around before John
suggested we "see what these things can do".
