Trail Reports : Bill Moore Lake Trail

To get to the Bill Moore Lake trail take I-70 out of Denver to the Empire exit, US 40. Once in town take a right on Park ave. The road is narrow and winds up the hill. It turns into a gravel and continues past an old mine. Follow the switchbacks up the mountain. There are a couple of neat spur trails that do connect back up with the main trail. The photo is of one of the spurs I took on the way back down. It looks pretty serious going up. Probably rates a 4, rear locker is a good idea. The rocks are large and sharp, body damage is possible. I made it through without any damage picking my way through on 31” tires. Once back on the main trail watch for the signs, there are a few trails, stay on the Bill Moore Lake, Millert Creek trail. There is another steep section that has some challenging ruts. There is a bypass that is still steep but smoother. I used the rear locker again to ensure smooth sailing. It is a wide open area, not much chance for damage, probably a 3 for difficulty if you choose the rutted side. The trail traverses the hillside, there are a couple different ways to go but they culminate in the same place. As you get close to the lake there is a bit of a mud pit for the daring or winch equipped. It is easily bypassed though. The trail ends at the lake, there are cabin remains at the lake also. There look to be several good camping sites along this trail, both in the woods and above the trees. The lake lies in a large bowl area, the scenery is spectacular.
